In 1754 at the recommendation of George Washington the British built Fort Prince George on “Point”. Later in 1758 General Forbes named the settlement Pittsburgh after William Pitt. Coal mining began in Pennsylvania on Coal Hill, now Mount Washington. Johnny Appleseed called Pittsburgh home for twelve years and Lewis and Clark’s large keelboat was made here.

Pittsburgh is known as “The City of Bridges” and “The Steel City” for its many bridges and former steel manufacturing base. The central business district shown on your map is a triangular tract carved by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers which form the Ohio River.
